Walking Tour in English | The Hague around 1900
Past architecture, stained glass, and biscuits. The Hague is the Dutch capital of Art Nouveau. At the beginning of the 20th century, painters and architects sought new art forms for a new, improved society. The Netherlands played a unique role in this creative quest. During the tour, we'll immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of an Art Nouveau city: a time when The Hague's canals were filled in to make way for trams and cars, when the first elegant department stores were built, and when the city's population grew rapidly. We walk through the center of the royal city and view examples of Dutch Art Nouveau. We'll meet the Dutch Oscar Wilde—the writer Louis Couperus, who so aptly described The Hague's modernist high society. We'll also discover which sweets were served in the tearooms of that era. In the narrow streets of the old town we find facade ceramics from the famous Hague factory and in the interiors of large shops preserved stained glass windows in the Art Nouveau style.
